After the war the bunker was closed, sealed and forgotten leaving just a myth for 35 years until a surprising discovery by the hotel during the the renovation of the Bamboo Bar in 2011. It was reopened in 2012 as a memorial of hardships of wartime.
Daily tours of Metropole’s Path of History and the bomb shelter with Ambassador of history are offered exclusively for hotel guests which we joined.
American folk singer, Joan Baez visited Hanoi with an American delegation in December 1972 and found herself caught in the Christmas bombings.
Her song “Where Are You Now, My Son?” was inspired during the stay with actual recordings from the hotel, from the massive Christmas bombing raids on Hanoi, from hours spent in the bunker of the hotel, from Christmas songs sung in the lobby of the hotel.

Overall it was Legendary stay at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi fully immersed in a living heritage that will always remain in our memories especially the bomb shelter. For us younger generations who were fortunate to avoid war, the experience was intense, no matter the outcome of a war, the ones who truly suffered were definitely the civilians who only hope is just a decent living.
